Hi, I've recently become a fan of models and fashion. And i was just wondering if anyone could give me some pointers.

1) what is dress size? (i mean i understand that it's a size, and that 4 is avg) but i mean what would be a 0? what measurements ##-##-##?

2) some popular models? (so far i like Carmen Kass, Jessica Stam and Miranda Kerr)

3) criteria for a good model? is it just what you think is pretty?

4) whats a good measurement, i've seen a lot of 34-24-34, is that normal?

so just plz help i would love to learn more about the industry and would appreciate some help thx

Bryan

1. dress size is the size that model wears
average measurement for models are 34-24-34, which is about size 4
for size 0 I am not sure what the measurement will be, the real ones

2. check out our Submit Favorite Models forum and you will see them all

3. nowdays pretty is not a current look, it is all about "'ugly" - most agencies promote the same blue-eyes blonde look, unfortunately

4. see answer # 1 Laughing

Hi Bryan, welcome to FMD.

1. Dress size is just that, it's a measurement of clothing. I'm assuming your a male so dress size is like pant sizes for example. Size 0 however is for women who are smaller than the measurement voguegirl mentioned. Typically for women who have a 30 inch bust like 22 waist and so forth.

2. Ok how much time do you have? lol Just look at the models who are working the prestigous shows and are landing the great campaigns of Chanel, Prada, Gucci, Marc Jacobs, and look out for the models being photographed by Steven Meisel. I think the it girls right now are Karlie Kloss, Anja Rubik, Magdalena Frackowiak, Jac, Anna Jagodzinksa, Sigrid Agren, and newcomer Frida is making a name for herself. Models like Freja Beha, Sasha Pivovarova, Isabeli, Lily Donaldson and Iris Strubegger are also really popular. but yea just look at whos appearing the most on covers, runways and major campaigns.

3. Beauty is subjective. The trend in models is always changing. The trend now I would describe it as I dunno non-traditional beauty like Hanne Gaby, Lindsay Wixson- a girl just has to be different looking. Out of the ordinary. Etheral, soft, animal-like, masculine, or maybe she looks like shes gonna cut you lol these looks are popular right now.

4. voguegirl already mentioned the standard measuremement for models. It varies but typically models are narrow in the waist and hips cant be too big- sample sizes are made small. But models aren't normal that's why they're models lol The average woman has measurements of 34-24-34 but are usually 5'3 haha and models are usuallly around 5'9 to 5'11.

Broswe and enjoy!

For size 0, I can't give you direct measurements, but I can tell you that at 5'0 and 90 pounds, that's a size 0. As Deslin said though, models are much taller, so it changes (hence when the mdeia rags on '0' size models, I cry.). Don't forget about Natasha Poly and Abbey Lee they're both wonderful Smile Oh and although they're not high fashion, the VS models can get quite popualr in mainstream media so recognize the angels (Heidi, Doutzen, Alessandra, Miranda, etc).

Edit~From my own measurements 0 is actually 29" (Rather than the model norm)

I was wondering why size 4 seemed to be the normal, i thought it would be kinda fat, after seen the devil wears prada.

I know a lot of victoria secret models and thats what introduced me to fashion, now i'm sorta branching out into magazines and this site i suppose. I'll definately look up some models you guys mentioned.

thx to deslin, who put it in ways i might understand. Definately excited to discover more about fashion.

PS - was wondering how much a fashion show would cost to go to. and where i might find it in toronto. I would really like to experience fashion 1st hand

And is there anymore i should know about? Stuff i might come across and not understand

you might try to check some Canadian magazines - Flare, Fashion, Elle
and maybe start with Canadian models - Daria Werbowy, Coco Rocha, Jessica Stam, Lisa Cant, Amanda Laine, Kate Somers

I am not sure about Toronto Fashion Week, maybe you can search about it online
and most fashion weeks shows by invitations only

to place a picture under your user name, you have to go on FMD homepage and log in there

then click on "my profile", then "avatar", then "choose file" and upload the photo you want, then "save my personal settings"

you can also add signature, if you want
