Has anyone read the book Model: The Ugly Business of Beautiful Women by Michael Gross? I am reading it right now & there is some pretty explosive history in this book!
Apparently Madonna has read it & bought the movie rights to it, so look out for a film adaptation in the future!
If you haven't read it, its basically a history book on the modeling industry full of interviews, rare photos and juicy tid bits on models dating back from the 1920's all the way to the "rise of heroine chic"! The book was released in the mid 90s I believe so don't expect to hear about Coco, Sasha or even Carmen Kass!
But there are revealing accounts of Dorian Leigh, Lisa Fonssagrives, Dovima, Jean Shrimpton, Twiggy, Lauren Hutton, Gia Carangi, Jerry Hall, Iman, Verushka, Janice Dickinson, Christie Brinkley, Cindy Crawford, the Trinity, ending with Kate Moss. And a crap load of other models I've never heard of but whose stories are still mind-blowing!

Okay, so apparently the modeling business started off in a very questionable manner. Back then you were either a Powers girl or a Connover girl (the 2 only modeling agencies in the world: John Powers & Harry Connover).
Girls would get booked to do certain ads and were photographed in collections for many designers like Dior, Bill Blass, etc...But the questionable acts were among the sleazy agents. Powers was known to sleep around with his models and so was Connover. Apparently there were money issues as well, where girls would not get paid their hourly rate. In addition to getting girls booked for legit jobs, these two agencies were known to run a dating service. Men would come to the agencies and pay them to take a girl out for a night of fun  YIKES!
All of a sudden the word model was synonomous with prostitute. As back then, models would walk around with hat bags to their various jobs. Now prostitutes were walking around with these same hat bags and getting their tricks. So yea, modeling started off on a bad note until Eileen Ford came in the picture. |

Seems like a good read. Especially considering my hunch that I've only just started discovering how vicious the Fashion Industry is on my own. |
