First Spain, now France?? French government may put a ban on thin models too Shocking because Paris is probably THEE fashion capital of the world! If the proposed ban is approved that would mean no more "extremely" thin models on the runways, magazines, and ads.
read all about it: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24126072/ |

Wow, that IS shocking, but in a great way! Just imagine the look on the designer's faces when they find out... that is if they haven't already. |

haha! Hm... does the government have a right to put bans on things like that though? (I'm all for the body image thing fyi but questioning if the government has a right to do so) I mean, isn't the designer's choice on how they want to present their clothes (as screwed up most of that is?)
I'm happy to hear that though! |

I think something needed to be done. I mean if you were a reporter and they told you to take diet pills, you wouldn't do it. But in the fashion world you have no choice. Its a job, and jobs should not be a danger to your health. |

Not to mention an endanger to your life.
Take for instance those two Brazilian models (i think they were sisters, too, which is even worser) who died last year because of malnutrition and heart failure. Pur-eety scary.
Makes you wonder (and worry) over why modeling is one of the most sought-after jobs for young girls in the world.. or atleast it seems that way anyway. It makes me worry when i see like 13 year olds saying stuff like "I'll do whatever it takes to be a model even if it means losing 30 pounds". Seriously... |

So this is the latest ploy they have employed to make it look like they care when ... really we all know they dont.
and only the style councils or whatever they call themselves these days ... the Gestapo?? I dont know anyway they say what the guidelines are. It's admirable of the frecnh government but it has been tried and campaigned for in this country too and it will never get through parliament on the simple fact that it obstructs civil liberties freedom of speech and freedom of expression. So sorry for being what may appear to be cynical but it very most likely wont work.
And who out there decides what 'extreme thinness' is. a civil servant speak loophole if you ask me. where there is a will there is a way xxxx believe me lol. |

Deslin 'in style':
Nice post! And thank you for sharing this news with us. My take is much the same as Callie's, insofar as there is getting to be far, far too much either 'agency' or 'government' intervention in people's lives.
Notwithstanding anything else, some humans are given the disposition of being very lean to the point of thin and skinny. Some are attractive and some simply are not. I don't think we need the government to come in and tell anyone what they can or cannot do when it comes to the body composition or how they choose to live.
In finale, I am rather tired of 'Steroid' scandals, mandatory piss tests, drug-free environments, and mega billion dollar organizations bringing suit against various people--like Nike, Adidas, and the like for folks who transgress.
That behavior is between them and their maker.
PS End of Rant--I would never want to sound callous however; there are models being born everyday and literally millions waiting in the wings for their shot at the runway. If a few have eating disorders, well, welcome to the frickin' world!
Thank you [appluase! whistling! bravo!] Thank you.

Im a strong believer in taking responsibility for one's own actions. In a perfect world people would not blame fashion magazines, models, and movie stars for their own insecurities. It is simply irresponsible and cowardly to blame the fashion industry for causing bad body image. Society should take responsibility for their own actions and teach little girls the power of self-will and independence so that they can pick up a copy of Vogue and not feel intimidated and insecure after looking at its glossy pages. But that is how it SHOULD be, and what should be is a lot different than the REALITY of the situation.
In reality, society does not implement good body image, a self will, and a sense of self-worth to the younger generations, so what happens? They grow up looking at the fashion mags and realize that they need to look like the models rather than being happy with themselves. Generations have been cheated and targeting the fashion industry is not the answer. It begins to sound like a Witch Hunt when designers' civil liberties are being constricted simply because society is not equipped for the art of fashion. This issue of eating disorders is way deeper than passing a bill to stop thin models from working, it has to start at home and children need to be taught by their parents or whoever the importance of true happiness with themselves and to develop a self will. And it is sad that designers have to limit themsleves for society's incompetence. NOte, what society needs to realize is that guns do not kill people, PEOPLE with guns kill people!! Fashion does not kill people, and sadly fashion is the target.
And o yea, if theyre targeting thin models and designers for promoting "extreme" thinness, then the government needs to target fast food commercials and ads a lot more because there are far more obese people than underweight people. I mean isn't obesity just as bad as anorexia?
Can I get a AMEN! |
