I do model, and these are things that could be cleared up that I've learned from being in the industry.
1. If you can't accept even the most harsh criticism, don't bother modeling. That's the number one thing a model (or actor) should have as an ability, to accept criticism and not freak out over it. Some might be a wake up call, most of it is just one person's opinion. It's not the end of the world.
2. If you are below 5'7" you cannot model high fashion. If you are very young and have huge potential of growing, or have an extremely unique face, 5'6" might be acceptable. Really though, even 5'7" is generally too short. I'm 5'8 1/2" and I'm considered one of the shortest. If you're too short, (generally below 5'4") even commercial modeling will be a hard.
3. Get real. Personality and people skills are definitely the #1 thing to have in any industry, but this IS a world based off looks. If you do not photograph well or just don't meet the physical requirements (mainly height, measurements are variable since there are plus-size models) you have to chase after another dream.
4. You should never really have to pay for anything. Test shoots, classes, whatever will always come out of your paycheck. Which is why agencies are so careful on who they chose to represent. it's an investment.
6. If you go to an open call, don't photoshop/edit pictures. bad idea. seriously. your Polaroids will usually require little (but no makeup is the best) makeup, natural hair, and natural lighting.
7. Carefully pick your agency and always do background checks. If they ask for any sort of paying (like a monthly fee or something) it's very likely a scam. If they guarantee you WILL get jobs then that is a sign of suspicion as well.
8. Get used to being half nude. especially runways, models will not have a single dressing room provided, you'll just dress up in front of everyone else. It's odd at first, you'll get used to it.
9. (and last) Be optimistic and strong. It's tough and that kind of attitude will go far. remember, your health and not your body measurements, always comes first.
just to clear up a bit. If you're going to argue, I'd love to see the other side of the story. This seems like a nice community, I'll not post my pictures here because I don't like doing that, but nevertheless friendly people. |

thats easily done on the profile tab in your account. You can upload an avatar there. We arent like any other forum where you have to have your avatar sized to specifics ... you can upload any picture at any size and it will resize it automatically ... so whatever you choose xxxxx and it doesnt have to be hosted you can upload from your own documents xxxx |

Thank you for that. That's really cool. I'm only 5ft 6ins so I accept that if I do choose to pursue a modeling career it probably would not be high fashion. I've only been thinking lately that I maybe I should go for it because about a year/year and a half ago I was scouted while shopping to do a fashion shoot for a local magazine where i live and it was an amazing experience. But even if I decide not to become a model (which is more likely) I love fashion. It's my life thus why I joined this site lol.

I never post pictures, it's not a thing I am comfortable with.
I do have some more things that might be useful though,
10. Learn to wear heels, learn to live in heels, learn to LOVE those heels. Because whether its flats or sneakers in fashion, there will always be heels. There like denim jeans, they will never go away.
A personal model-embarrassment: Before modeling, I shunned those things (I hated that I was a skyscraper compared to the other kids at school, so think about that normal height with HEELS!! lol) and then I decided to give modeling a shot. Which was awesome! then, I got my first photoshoot, which was for a dress designer. It was a whole day of wearing heels, and I was stumbling around trying to balance like a moron. NOT COOL. Don't make that same mistake I did.
11. Don't have high expectations. Those magazines and whatever tend to over-glamorize things. The runway is really not very pretty backstage. It's more like... chaos.
12. Study how professional models walk. They all walk a slight different style. You'll notice that everyone has a personal "walk".
13. clear skin is a must. which sucks because I am not naturally clear skinned.
14. I promise, models are very nice. I have never met a model who needs an attitude makeover. Stereotypes are wrong.
just more fyi's about modeling. thanks everyone! I hope people can learn here! |
